Managing non-profit organisations: Towards a fresh approach

Detrimental Society Functioning Paper 1

Helmut E. Anheier

January 2000

Abstract

This conventional paper puts on the thesis that the management of nonprofit organisations is normally ill realized because we proceed through the wrong assumptions about how these kinds of organisations run. Based on this premise, this kind of paper grows a model from the non-profit contact form as a conglomerate of multiple organisations with multiple bottom level lines that demand a selection of different management approaches and fashions: a holistic pregnancy that emphasises the diversity of orientations within and out of doors the business; a normative dimension that includes not only economic aspects nevertheless also the importance of principles and governmental policies; a strategic-developmental dimension that sees organisations as evolving systems coming across problems and opportunities that frequently require fundamental dilemmas; and a great operative aspect that handles the each day functioning of organisations. In a third part, the newspaper presents the fundamental contours of your analytic approach that attempts to accommodate the distinct managing challenges confronted by nonprofit organisations.

Likewise, efficiency theory and normative supervision approaches notify much of what this daily news proposes (Powell and DiMaggio, 1991; Gomez and Zimmermann, 1993; Kanter and High seasons, 1987; and Perrow, 1986). Yet the newspaper proceeds from the assumption that current administration and organisational theories have never fully come to terms with a simple query: are non-profit organisations...
